Potassium nitrite is a white to slightly yellowish crystalline solid, odorless and non-volatile, with a melting point of approximately 270 °C (decomposes before boiling). It is an inorganic salt and a source of the nitrite anion (NO₂⁻), commonly classified as a reactive inorganic intermediate. Industrially, it serves primarily as a diazotizing agent in the synthesis of dyes and pigments, and as a precursor to other nitrogen-containing compounds, including pharmaceuticals and agrochemical intermediates. Its applications are concentrated in organic synthesis, corrosion inhibition in industrial coolants, and as a food preservative (in regulated concentrations) for cured meats.
