China is the dominant global exporter of L-Ascorbic acid, accounting for the vast majority of international supply, while the United States, Germany, and India are the largest importers. These three importing countries collectively represent a substantial share of global demand, driven by pharmaceutical, food, and cosmetic applications. Recent data shows relative stability in export volumes from China, though fluctuations in L-Ascorbic acid prices have accompanied shifts in raw material costs and regulatory adjustments in key markets.
L-Ascorbic acid (CAS 50-81-7) is a white to off-white, crystalline powder with a slightly acidic taste and no significant odor; it is non-volatile, water-soluble, and decomposes without melting at approximately 190–192 °C. It is a naturally occurring organic compound classified as a water-soluble vitamin (vitamin C) and a potent reducing agent. Industrially, it serves primarily as a nutritional supplement in fortified foods and dietary supplements, and as an antioxidant and preservative in food and beverage processing. It is also used in pharmaceutical formulations for its bioavailability and stability-enhancing properties, and as a reducing agent in photographic developers and certain cosmetic preparations.
The starting point for synthesis of vitamin C is the selective of oxidationof the sugar compound D-sorbit to L-sorbose using Acetobacter suboxidansbacteria. L-sorbose is then converted to L-ascorbic acid, betterknown as vitamin C.
White crystals (plates or needles). Soluble in water; slightly soluble in alcohol;insoluble in ether, chloroform, benzene, petroleumether, oils and fats. Stable to air when dry. Oneinternational unit is equivalent to 0.05 milligram ofl-ascorbic acid.
